You’ve heard about, but do you have it? It is important to know if you have foot nail fungus, because the condition will only get worse until you treat it. You can spread it to other areas of your body and to members of your household very easily. Being aware if you have foot nail fungus is the first step to curing it. Here is how to tell if you have foot nail fungus:
Brown, yellow or black nail discoloration
The first and truest sign of toenail fungus is a discoloration of your toenails. Just one toenail may become infected at first, but the infection easily spreads to the rest of your toenails. The discoloration may begin simply as small spots or dots underneath the toenail and grow into large patches of color later on.
Thickening toenails
The second most popular symptom and tell tale sign of foot nail fungus is thickening of your toenails. You will need to file them down in order to get them to look normal and to apply treatment to the nail.
Brittle toenails
Toenails start to become brittle and may start to crumble around their edges in moderate to severe cases of toenail fungus. The toenail may even begin to separate from the toe. This is often painful as it becomes difficult to wear shoes and walk without putting pressure on the toenail.
Flaky skin
The skin around the infected toenails will eventually begin to flake and peel off.
Foul Odor
There is often a gross smell that protrudes from the toenail as fungi grow and debris and dead skin build up under the nail.
