Many carpet-cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful to your pet or your children. Here are some tips of finding the right natural carpet cleaning solution for you:
The most natural way to maintain your carpet is to vacuum regularly. It sounds obvious, but most carpet stains are caused by compounded dirt from the carpet surface. Keep your carpet in excellent condition by keeping dirt off the surface. This will save you from removing stains in the future.
Hot water will effectively work on a fresh stain. When a spill happens, act quickly by getting hot water from your kitchen sink or microwave some in a coffee mug. Pour the water on the stain and blot it with an old towel. Be careful not to burn yourself or your carpet with water that is too hot (no boiling water!).
A mixture of water and white vinegar will get stains that have been sitting for a while. Pour a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar into a bottle and spray the stain thoroughly. Let it sit for a minutes and clean the spot a dry cloth.
The following mixture works great on tough stains: ½ cup vinegar, ½ cup salt, ½ cup borax (non-toxic). Mix them into a paste and amply rub it onto the stain. Let the paste sit for 4 hours and vacuum it up.
Baking soda is a very powerful stain remover. For stubborn stains, sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it sit for a couple hours. Go over the stain with a vacuum cleaner and you should see it removed.
Make your own natural scent in addition to removing stains. Add 20 drops of organic essential oil of your choice (lavender, chamomile etc.) to ½ cup of baking soda. Sprinkle the mixture over your carpet and let it sit for a couple hours. Vacuum the mixture and enjoy the natural scent!
