Writing a book is a creative outlet that allows you to reach out to the world in a unique and personal way. Starting the process of writing a book may seem daunting, but these tips on writing a book will guide you through the process from brainstorming, to plot developing, to publishing.
Brainstorm: Starting Big.
The first step to writing a book is to decide what you want to write about. Fiction or nonfiction? What topic? Your options are endless. Decide whether or not you have knowledge on the area in which you are writing and jot down some research that would be good for you to do. Decide on the moral or purpose of your book and how you will portray it in your book.
Work up an outline: Develop the details.
Outline the general plot, decipher what you want to cover in your book and when it should happen in the story. Your outline should contain the basic components of the plot. You can change the outline as you write, but generally it is a good idea to know the basic direction you are headed before you start writing.
Start by outlining an expository where you introduce the time, setting, protagonist and a conflict with an antagonist. Chose characters and decide on their relationships and how they will develop through your book. The conflict or dilemma that you introduce is what will propel the book and keep the reader interested.
Write in complications, problems that make the situation even more complicated. Outline the rising action up to the climax, the events that raise the stakes for the protagonist. Decide on what the climax of the book will be and mark it in your outline. The climax is the most intense moment of the book, when everything comes together and the protagonist is at most risk. Then outline events of the falling action, the resolution of the story.
Creating: Write your book.
Begin writing your book by following the outline, feel free to change things as ideas come to you. Write through the outline to the end of your book, then go back and proofread. Look for grammar and spelling errors, also look for parts of the book that don't contribute to the overall plot that you can omit, as well as for areas that may need more description, dialogue or detail. You can continue the proofreading process for as long as you wish.
Feedback: Get other perspectives on your book.
Your next step in writing a book is to allow a trusted person or trusted people to proofread your book and give you feedback and suggestions. Be open to another person's perspective, however you are not required to follow all the advice you hear back - this is your book after all. It is a good idea however to listen to advice if more than one person has the same suggestion; often other people's perspectives can be more perceptive than your own.
Finishing touches: publishing, promoting and marketing.
Title your book and decide on a cover. Start the process of publishing your book by pursuing self publishing, print on demand publishing, or a traditional publishing house. Once you publish, you can start the work of promoting and marketing your book!
