What is the best approach to Writing a Postcard?

You don't have much space on a postcard, so it is helpful to think through your message before putting ink to paper.

Date and place. Write the day's date and your location – your mailing address if possible – at the upper right hand corner of the left side of the postcard.

Address. Begin your note by addressing your recipient, especially if you are writing to one person in a big household.

Explain. Clarify the significance of the postcard's picture; is it a place you have visited? When was this visit? What happened to make it memorable? This only needs to be a sentence or two long.

Short and sweet. Write a few sentences giving the highlights of your trip so far: where you've visited, what interesting meals you've had, interesting people you've met, etc.

Signing off. After signing your best wishes, make sure your name is legible; you don't want confusion as to who has actually sent the note.

Addressing and stamping. If you are sending to or from another country, make sure you write the name of his or her country beneath your recipient's address.
