The nicotine and chemicals in cigarettes have no direct relation to weight loss or gain. Smoking does decrease your appetite, so you eat less when you smoke which can result in weight loss. Some people do gain weight when they stop smoking, but only because their appetite is no longer suppressed and often confuse nicotine cravings for hunger. Some people also munch of food throughout the day just to avoid smoking, which obviously results in weight gain.
Quit smoking and avoid gaining weight.
- Drink water whenever you feel irritable, or have a craving to smoke.
- Switch to healthier, low calorie snacks to munch on like carrots and celery.
- Exercise more. Endorphins released when your body is exercising help fight irritability and cravings, and gets your body back into good physical shape.
- Stay busy. You'll eat less if you keep your schedule full and stay on the move.

You don't need to smoke to lose weight, there are other ways to naturally suppress your appetite. You can decrease your appetite by drinking more water, drinking coffee, eating fiber rich foods or taking fiber supplements and by eating protein.
