Brochures are successful marketing tools that describe your organization and its purpose to clients. Using Microsoft Word for creating a brochure that is professional looking has never been easier; simply follow these tips:
Change Margins. To set up the page for a brochure you first need to change the Word document's margins. Go to File, and then Page Setup and click on the Paper Size tab. The page orientation should be changed to Landscape. Next go to Margins and make your margins at point 5 all the way around the page.
Change Columns. Click on Format and go to Columns. Select the 3 column option under Presets. Next, change the gutter size between the columns (the space between each column)to be exactly twice the size of your margins for an even fold. In this case, they should be 1 inch apart.
Break up the Columns. You should insert column breaks so you can write on either of the 3 columns. You do this by typing in the Enter button for a blank line and then clicking on Insert, and Break, and Column Break.
Set up the page. In order for your document to appear more like a brochure and to help with visualization, turn text boundaries and paragraph marks on. You do this going to Tools, Options and clicking on the View tab.
Add text. Stick to 1 or 2 fonts, and make sure they are legible on any background colors you chose to use. Keep in mind where your text will be once you print and fold your brochure. It may help to fold a blank paper and mark what you want, where on the paper.
Add photos. Pictures make a brochure seem more professional and helps your readers understand what you are selling or explaining better. You simply do this by clicking on Insert, Picture and click on From File. Search for the picture you want to upload and click Ok.
Print. Depending on your printer, you may need to print the first page, turn the paper around and print on the other side of it to print on both sides of the paper. Duplexer attachments or large commercial printers have automatic options that do this for you.
Download Microsoft Templates
If you are concerned about getting the page setup right, or just want a shortcut to creating a brochure, simply go to Microsoft Office Online and search for brochure templates (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates). You can download a template for free, upload it onto Microsoft Word and insert your own colors, photos and text.
