Tight budgets don’t mean vacations can't be in the budget. Consider these cheap vacation ideas.

Local attractions - The perfect vacation might be in your own hometown or just a few hours away. Many people travel across the country to popular vacation hot spots, but forget that a vacation spot or quaint motel is right in their own neck of the woods.

Staycations - Consider a staycation when your vacation time comes up. Staycation is the new buzzword for those on a tighter travel budget. This can mean staying in a nearby motel, setting up a tent in the backyard, taking in local attractions you’ve never bothered to visit, or just taking the phone off the hook and curling up with a book you’ve been wanting to read.

Vacation exchanges - Let’s say you live in the Rocky Mountains within a short drive of a nice ski area and have a friend living near a Florida beach. Check out the possibility of  swapping homes for a week or two this winter. One person’s exotic vacation is often another’s backyard.

Cheap food - It’s almost always cheaper to buy food from a grocer, then put together your own menu and throw it all in a cooler. Instead of stopping along the way at a restaurant, replenish your cooler with a stop at a grocery store. Fast food restaurants sometimes offer one-dollar deals, but consider your health and how often you want to chomp on that kind of food.

Vacation pooling - If you connect well with certain friends or another family, pool your vehicles and your resources and travel together. If you want to travel alone, maybe they will let you borrow their rv.

Surf for vacations - Even the smallest tourist areas are now advertising on the Internet. And just about every place on earth wants you to visit and leave your vacation dollars. Pop your dream vacation spot in a search engine and see what special deals they are currently promoting.

Big can be cheaper - The cheapest flights often take you between the biggest cities. Big cities, big venues, and big airlines can often afford to offer the biggest vacation packages.
