Do you enjoy being around children? Is your passion to help empower the next generation? You may be an excellent candidate for a career working with children. The options are plentiful.
There are several categories into which child-related careers can fall into: (1) educational, (2) social service, (3) medical, (4) and miscellaneous jobs. Some require an advanced degree, and some require little more than a simple love of kids.
Educational
Teacher: You can be a teacher of pre-school, elementary, and middle-school kids, either working as a homeroom teacher or as a teacher of a particular subject: art, history, music, math, science, sports coach, etc. You can also work as a special education or substitute teacher.
Counselor/child care specialist. You can serve as a guidance counselor for children or as an assistant or aide to teachers in caring for children.
Librarian. If you love books and children, being a children's librarian, whether based in a school or in a public library, is the ideal job.
Social Service
Child care worker. You can run your own child care center or child counseling service.
Child specialist. There are numerous specialties to choose from, including child welfare, child development, child life, child support enforcement, and child extension.
Therapist. Work with children in an inspiring field: become an art, music, or recreation therapist.
Other social service jobs involving children include adoption counseling, foster parenting, and child advocacy.
Medical
Pediatrician. Work to improve individual children's health and development.
School nurse. If your specialty is scrapes and seizures in young scholars, you can work as a school nurse.
Child psychiatrist. Help children become mentally as well as physically healthy.
Other Child Related Careers
There are a myriad of other child related careers, many of which do not require advanced educational degrees.
Children's book author. Spin tales that ignite children's imaginations.
Magician/clown. Provide children with hands-on, live entertainment: make them gasp in wonder, or laugh in hearty hilarity.
Camp director/counselor. Provide a rejuvenating camp experience for children in the great outdoors.
Nanny/au pair. Look after children in U.S. households and those abroad. Be prepared to meet head-on various challenges such as language and cultural barriers and disciplinary differences.
Youth minister. Teach children the basics of your church's faith and help them grow spiritually.
