Publishing your own book as an eBook is a great way to reach a larger audience.
How do I publish an eBook?
- Convert to PDF format. Converting your book manuscript to a downloadable PDF file or an eBook format is fairly easy. You first need to convert your manuscript to PDF format. The only online free PDF converter that I know of is Primo PDF ( www.primopdf.com).
- Select the eReader format you want use. Of course you can sell your eBook in a downloadable PDF format, but in order to market and sell your book it is best to convert your PDF into popular eReader formats. Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, iPhone and iPodTouch, and Barnes and Noble's Nook have the biggest audiences.
CreateSpace charges $300 to convert a PDF into Kindle format. A little pricy, but worth it if your goal is optimum exposure. You could also check out Digital Divide Data, an organization that converts PDF files into standard eBook formats (www.digitaldividedata.org/services/ebooks).
How do I make money on my eBook?
Ebooks generally are not the most lucrative way to make money off your book, but it does get your book read and you more known as an author. Unknown authors generally need to offer their books for free or only a few dollars if they want people to download it. Here are some ideas on making as much profit as you can on your eBook:
- Offer the first 100 pages or so for free. People will download what's free and then if they like it, will buy more. Many a time I've gotten caught up in the first few hundred pages of a free novel, and in order to find out what happened I gladly paid the $9.99 to finish the story.
- Make buyers feel like they are getting a deal. Offer discounts on other books if they buy yours, or give a 2 for 1 deal. People are much more likely to buy the book if they feel like they are getting a bargain.
- Utilize selling tools. Have people you know write positive book reviews. Enter your book on as many categories as possible so that people in different book genres will come across your book.
- Offer hard copy versions. Generally eBooks should be in addition to online publishing and selling of hard copies of your book, since you aren't able to rake in much money with an eBook.
