What is Online Book Publishing?

You don't need to worry about selling your book to big name publishers in order for your hard work to be read by others. With online book publishing options you can affordably publish and market a book on your own, resulting in more rights and royalties over your work.

What is the benefit of online book publishing?

Online print-on-demand (POD) publishing companies skip the step of large print runs, simply printing a copy of a book when it is ordered. This reduces warehouse costs and  the necessity for the author to preorder and purchase a certain number of books before they sell.  The lack of production waste increases royalties for the author. For example, BookSurge (soon to be named CreateSpace, an Amazon POD publishing company) currently offers royalties of 35% to authors, which is far better than  traditional publishing companies offer authors.

POD publishing gives you all the rights of your book and thus you can control the way your book is marketed. Traditional publishing companies ask you to give up many rights of your book, and essentially after they pay the author the book is theirs to market and reprint as they want.

How does online book publishing work?

After you have a book manuscript, you purchase POD software in which you upload your book. There are many options with various pros and cons, the top recommended are CreateSpace, iUniverse, Author House, and Outskirts Press.  Online self publishing software run for about $500-$600.

You select the size of the book you want, format your manuscript to fit that size, convert your Word document into PDF format, create cover art and convert it into PDF format, and upload everything onto the online publishing software of your choice. In a matter of a few weeks you will receive a book proof in the mail for you to go through and mark changes that need to be made. You submit the changes online and officially publish your book! You can also change things after you officially publish, though the book will go "out of stock" for a few days while the changes are uploading.

What happens after you publish your book?

After publishing your book you can begin to focus on marketing and selling your book. Online publishing companies often have their own bookstores that they sell your book on, offering you a certain percentage of royalties every time the book is sold. They can also connect you with bigger merchants and online bookstores.
