Tips on Laundry Room Organization

Laundry rooms have the tendency to collect clutter and random piles of clothes. Follow these tips that I picked up on laundry room organization and be free of disorganization!

Build up instead of out. There is usually space above a washer and dryer for shelving and storage.  It often looks more uniform and clean to have cabinets that match the rest of your house instead of shelves. If you do have shelving, pick up matching bins to go onto the shelves to store things in. Having loose paraphernalia on the shelves adds clutter and makes the room look disorganized.  Try to avoid stacking boxes and bins on the floor of the laundry room as this is the first step to clutter. If they can’t fit on the shelves, they should be stored in another location.

Put things in their place. Put the items that you use most often (laundry detergent, fabric softener, the iron, etc.) on the bottom shelf above the washer and dryer for easy and fast access.  Cleaning supplies should go on high shelves that are out of reach of children and pets, not stored in buckets on the ground.  Have a rule for yourself to put things that you normally would set on the washer and dryer up on the shelves in designated bins instead.  Having clean surfaces helps to reduce clutter and keep your laundry room organized.

Have an efficient laundry collection strategy. Laundry organizers and dividers are well worth their cost.  Laundry organizers provide a place to throw your white laundry, colored clothes, and clothes that need to be washed separately. Your laundry is sorted and organized from the get go instead of in random piles on the floor or in one heaping mound of unsorted laundry in the corner.

Buy at least two extra laundry baskets for your laundry room. This way nothing gets set on the top of the washer or on piles on the floor. One basket should be used for collecting clean laundry as soon as it is done drying.

The other basket should be used for collecting sweaty and stinky clothes after playing sports or working out at the gym. This way you can quickly wash all the clothes that may be stinking up your laundry room at once.  If company is coming over and you have not had a chance to wash the gym clothes, you can set the separate basket of sports clothes out in the garage to air out until later.
