Keeping your closet organized can be difficult and reorganizing can seem like a daunting task. We are all guilty of throwing clothes, shoes and bags at the bottom of our closets in a quick pickup frenzy, and sometimes just out of laziness. I know from experience that months later when you can't find anything to wear and you realize it is time to organize your closet the task can feel overwhelming. Learn how to organize a closet in a way that makes it easy to keep clean and orderly.
It starts with sorting.
Remove everything from your closet and sort it into piles. Jeans, dress pants, cotton shirts, dress shirts, tank tops, shorts, underwear, shoes, you get the idea. Make sure there is a box at your side to pile items that you no longer use to give away. Decluttering your closet with clothes that are out of style or don't fit you anymore is essential to an organized closet.
Section off your closet.
Look at your closet and decide where you will put what. It helps to add a second closet bar beneath a tall one to hang clothes and to attach extra shelves to add storage space. Make sure the clothes that you use the most will be the easiest to access. High shelves can store out-of-season clothes and things you don't need often. It helps to buy a shoe hanger or shoe rack to attach to the dowels in your closet or the back of the closet door for easy access. Try not to pile anything on the closet floor if you can help it.
Buy organization helpers.
If you need extra shelves, dowels or shoe racks for your closet, make a list and head to the store to pick them up. While at the store make sure to buy more hangers. Often the biggest reason clothes ends up on the floor or piled on a chair is because there is not enough hangers. White plastic hangers are cheap and can be found at any department store. I bought plastic hangers at Target for a little over a dollar for each 10 pack.
If you don't have a dresser or chest of drawers in your room already, it is worth investing in one. Putting your underwear, sweats, pajamas and even jeans in the drawers gives you more space in your closet.
Reload your closet.
Begin putting clothes in your dresser drawers first. This will help you know how much clothes you are trying to put in your closet. Make sure not to pack your drawers so full that it is impossible to keep them folded and organized. If you still have too much clothes for your closet once you have filled the drawers to your satisfaction, you should consider getting rid of more clothes.
Start putting clothes on hangers and hanging them up in their newly designated closet area one sorted pile at a time. First hang up your pants, then your shirts, etc. Make sure it is easy to distinguish between closet sections so that when putting clothes away you don't have to think twice about where an item belongs.
Make the laundry basket handy.
There should now be space on the floor for your laundry basket. It helps to have one that is divided into three sections, one for white clothes, one for colored, and the other for items that need to be washed separately. This will save you time sorting laundry later and helps to keep your closet floor clean.
