What are the Best Ways to Quit Smoking

You know why you want to quit smoking, the big question is how you will do it. Different quit methods work for different people. Explore what are the best ways to quit smoking and find the answer that is right for you.

 

Zyban. An antidepressant known to restrict cravings for nicotine, Zyban has a 30% success rate in  helping people to quit smoking.  Schedule a consultation with your doctor to see if they think Zyban is a good choice for you. Only a doctor can prescribe you a prescription, and remember never take antidepressant without doctor supervision.

 

Develop a mental scare. Fear of the consequences of smoking can overpower nicotine cravings. Make a list of all the reasons you need to quit, including health and personal reasons. Some examples may be; to be able to put my family ahead of myself and my addictions, to decrease my risks of heart disease, reduce my risk of cancer, to avoid dying 12-14 years before my time, to look better, etc.  Put this list all over your house, at work, and in your car. Put a copy where you normally keep your cigarettes so you will be reminded of why you want to quit as you reach for a smoke.

 

Nicotine gum. If you chew 10-12 pieces throughout the day for at least 30 minutes each, and gradually chew less and less  over a few weeks, you can eventually wean yourself off of nicotine.  Be careful to avoid addiction to the gum, you don't want to just replace cigarettes, you want to overcome your addition.  I recommend the brands Nicorette, Equate Nicotine, and Walgreen's Nicotine Gum.

 

Cold turkey. Chose a day to be done and then stop.  Throw away all your cigarettes. Know that this means no more smoking. Not ever. Fight against withdrawal symptoms like irritability and depression with exercise, which releases endorphins that boost your mood and outlook on life. Yoga is also a good way to fight withdrawal symptoms, help relieve stress and irritability.  If you cut cold turkey make sure to drink lots of water, to flush the nicotine out of your system as fast as possible. In general you should stop feeling withdrawal symptoms within 1 to 2 weeks of quitting.

 

Hypnosis. A lot of people claim that they quit smoking with the help of hypnosis.  Hypnosis can cause you to feel nauseated every time you have a craving for nicotine, which quickly teaches the body it would rather not smoke. If you want hypnosis to work, you must also have the willpower to quit.

 

Acupuncture. An ancient Chinese medicine is known to help stop nicotine addictions. Acupuncture focuses on reestablishing 12 key channels of energy known as chi through the body. The idea of acupuncture is that the channels of energy become blocked and the free flow of energy through your body is inhibited, causing health problems, addictions and bad habits. By placing fine needles  dipped in various natural herbs in open acupuncture points on the body, you can release blocked energy.

 

The procedure lasts only 35-45 minutes, and involves soothing relaxation time. Many people claim that You do not feel the needles and that their cravings for nicotine are reduced, helping to eliminate the symptoms of withdrawal. You need consistent acupuncture treatment in order to experience results.  Generally people describe experiencing nausea, vomiting, headaches, or dizziness when tobacco is used after acupuncture treatments, consequently reducing the desire to smoke.
