Passports are your ticket across international borders and serve as your ultimate proof of identity. For this reason passports are a hot item to steal and are detrimental to loose. However there is no need to cry over lost passports, follow these tips and solve your passport-less worries in as little as a few days
 | You must report that your passport has been lost or stolen |
Report Lost Passports
You must report that your passport has been lost or stolen so that the US Department of State can cancel your passport number. This is so that no one can use your passport under false pretenses.
You can call the US State Department to report your lost passports at 1-877-487-2778 from 8am to 10pm, Eastern Time. You also have the option of filling out a lost or stolen passport form (Form DS-64) and mailing it to the U.S. Department of State's consular for lost and stolen passports.
Replace Lost Passports
Once you have reported your passport as lost or stolen you must replace it by submitting a new passport application (Form DS-11) with the required documentation and the Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport (Form DS-64). These forms are available at the U.S. Department of State website. If you are in a rush to receive your replacement passport, you can pay an additional $60 and overnight shipping fees to rush your passport order.
If you find your lost passports later…
If you later find passports that you previously reported lost or stolen you need to send them to the Consular for Lost or Stolen Passports. The consular will then cancel and deactivate the actual passport. You can request that it be sent back to you after the cancelation. If a passport is reported as lost or stolen you cannot later ask for it to be re-validated.
Lost Passports Overseas…
If you are overseas and your passport is either lost or stolen you must contact the US Embassy or Consulate nearest you. They will help issue you a new passport.
