Tips to make a room look bigger

  • Wall mirrors can make a room feel more than double in size. Consider using large flat mirrors on a single wall.
  • Use light colored paint on the walls. There are exceptions, but dark colors tend to make you feel more closed in.
  • Put fewer hangings on the walls. What hangings you do use should be flat and light.
  • Use less furniture. And furniture with clean lines takes up less space. Overstuffed furniture not only really does take up more room, but can also make the room feel smaller.
  • Store unused items in closets and cupboards. Items that belong in the room can be stored inside or under furniture. Drawers in coffee tables work well in a living room. Even some sofas have drawer storage.
  • Add a window with a clean, simple frame. During the day, a large, flat window can add some of the outside to the room.
  • Use flat, light-colored shades and blinds. Thick drapes and a fluffy valance can take up a lot of room.
  • Avoid hanging lights, especially large chandeliers. Recessed lighting gives the ceiling a more open feel.
  • In bedrooms, only use the size of bed you really need. Don’t add a queen bed when all you need is a twin or a bunk bed. If you need a large bed, make sure it has storage underneath.
  • Use wood, tile, or tight weave carpeting. Flat flooring stays low, and hard flooring sounds louder and larger.
  • If possible, have all entry doors open out of the room.
