You will need to create an efficient and dedicated workspace.

But before you throw in the towel at your 9-to-5 job, here are some of the disciplines and situations working from home will require.

• You will need to dedicate the time. While it may seem like you would have more time if you could eliminate your daily commute, small tasks such as picking up the kids from school and running errands can whittle away your work day. Make sure you are able to dedicate the amount of time needed to create or contribute to a successful business.

• You will need to be disciplined. You have to get out of bed and get the job done without a supervisor visibly checking in on you.

• You will need to create an efficient and dedicated workspace. Your business simply cannot thrive unless you have a place in your home where you can work without distraction.

• You will need to be prepared to be alone. Getting away from the hustle and bustle may sound great. But once you are spending all your days at home, you may become lonely. If stress alone is driving your decision to work at home, an extended vacation or a change in work atmosphere may be more appropriate solutions.

• You will need to completely understand the financial implications of working from home. Some jobs that are offered to employees who prefer to work at home are actually opportunities to become an independent contractor, which means that you no longer will be an "employee" of the company, which can make some sizable sacrifices in health care and retirement benefits offered by your current employer.
