Declutter. Get rid of things you don't need: throw out, give away, recycle. Remove from the room anything that doesn't belong in your office. Test your pens and markers and toss any that don't work.
After decluttering, file the rest of your papers, except for those that demand immediate attention. Place these in your inbox to deal with ASAP. Go through your inbox everyday.
Record notes on a whiteboard. Consider getting a cork board as well to post important information. There are boards that combine a magnetic dry-erase whiteboard calendar with cork board space. You may also want to get a master calendar so that you can record family events as well as business events.
Keep a scratch pad or a stack of Post-Its always on hand for quick note-taking. Go through this scratch paper regularly and record the info. You don't want your scratch paper to pile up too much.
Get a desktop drawer or file holder if you need more space. Place organizers in your desk drawers to store pocket-sized items.
Store away electronics when not in use.
Keep cleaning supplies easy-to-reach.
Organize throughout the day; don't wait until the end to organize the mess that's piled up.
