Involve. Hands-on activity helps kids learn better than sitting back and listening for the whole time.
Challenge. Don't underestimate what the kids are capable of. Expect more of them, don't dumb down lessons, and most likely they won't disappoint you.
Listen. Give the kids a chance to tell their point of view. This doesn't mean you let them interpret a Bible passage whatever way they want, but give them a chance to figure it out, to talk it through, to ask questions. You also need to see their perspective, where they're coming from.
Question. Encourage question asking, and admit when you don't know an answer. Then search for the answer together.
Example. If you aren't interested in what you're studying, the kids won't be interested either. Lead by example.
Grounded. Feel free to use crafts, field trips, Powerpoint, drama, and more to get ideas across to kids. But remember to keep centered in the Word of God and on the foundations of the faith. Too much gee-whiz supplements can distract from the point of the whole study.
