Preventing mouse infestations starts with two important topics: sanitation and mouse-proof construction.
 | | a mouse moves in |
- All inside garbage should be stored in a garbage can. When the can is full, it should be emptied into a secure outside garbage can. Make sure the can has a lid.
- At least once per week, remove all garbage from your premises to a waste management center.
- Store pet food in sealed containers, either in the porch or in the garage. If mice get a taste of pet food, they will eventually search for a way into the house for more goodies.
- Feed pets in a situation that can be easily cleaned up. Watch out for places the food can roll under to wait for mice.
- Uneaten food should never be left in pet dishes for too long.
- Keep floors in the house, porch, and garage swept and especially free of food crumbs.
- Clean under couches, beds, and wherever popcorn, chips, etc. may collect.
- Check for food spills in cupboards and in the pantry regularly. Without being discovered, mice can feed off such places for months.
- Do not store mouse-friendly items – such as boxes and lumber piles – near the foundation of your house.
- Make sure you completely eliminate all openings larger enough for a young mouse to pass.
- If you need a temporary plug for an opening, plugging it with steel wool works well.
- If you find any cracks in your home’s foundation, openings for water pipes, vents, or utilities, you should seal them with caulk, expanding foam, hardware cloth, or concrete.
