Sometimes the most important things are the most basic and most obvious. Follow these tips to live a greener, more sustainable and responsible lifestyle.
Reduce, reuse, recycle. Buy foods that come in minimal packaging (use the tap water instead of buying bottled water, unless your tap is contaminated); compost fruit and vegetable scraps from the table; unplug appliances when not in use; use a clothesline for drying clothes whenever possible; recycle all paper, cardboard, aluminum, and glass products – anything that can be recycled.
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. Give away clothes you don't need, or modify them to fit your needs rather than buying new ones. Think carefully before each purchase – do you really need to buy something new, or can you use something you already have?
Waste not, want not. Don't waste valuable resources; we Americans tend to do this far too often in this age of abundance. Before shopping, see if you can use things you already have or if you can borrow appliances, etc., whenever you need them.
Plant a garden. Experience the independence and deliciousness that a home garden brings – no matter how small.
Learn to cook, and pack your own lunches. Select fresh ingredients and cook with love.
Know where your food, clothes, and necessities come from. Be a smart shopper; investigate the origins of the things you buy. Vote with your dollar and your fork.
Bike, carpool, or walk whenever possible. Perhaps you can skip driving to the gym to go on the treadmill and instead run to work or bike to the library.
