As a woman, traveling alone can be both invigorating and dangerous. After extensively studying abroad in Central America I learned a few things about traveling every girl should know. Make your trip safer by following these 4 women travel tips.
 | | Learn the laws and customs abroad | Study Up
Before you travel research behavioral expectations of where you are going. Learn about the culture and customs. Look up laws regarding women (especially in Islamic countries).
Dress Appropriately
If you dress well and stylishly thieves will assume you've got some serious cash supporting your endeavors. You can also attract the wrong kind of attention if you show too much skin and cleavage. Wear modest clothing at all times. The best thing to do is to buy appropriate local female clothing once you arrive.
Don't be a Theft Target
Often single women are targeted by thieves. Avoid attention by leaving your jewelry at home. If someone grabs your bag, let it go. Resisting theft risks assault. It is better to not carry a bag at all but to wear your money inside your clothes. Use a money pouch that can hide under your shirt, put money in your sock, or sew a little pocket in your bra.
Stay in Communication
Let the American Embassy know when you will be in the country and where you will be staying. Keep in contact with people at home letting them know you're all right. In the rare case that anything were to happen to you people would know to look for you sooner because of sudden lack of contact.
