Tips on Using Public Restrooms

Using public restrooms is often a necessity. After all, when you gotta go, you gotta go! As anyone who has used public restrooms can tell you, they are often not very sanitary. You never know who used the stall before you.  After 20 years of experience using public restrooms and I have tried a plethora of ways to use them in the most sanitary way possible.  I now offer you the 4 most sanitary tips on using public restrooms.

Never sit on the toilet seat itself.

Some people squat and try to hover over the seat while others line the toilet seat with toilet paper or cover it with provided toilet seat tissue covers.  Any of these ways works fine, you can often reduce mess by actually sitting down. Just make sure you cover the seat completely and your tush does not come into contact with the actual seat itself.

Always use the far stall by the wall.

The stall farthest from the door automatically gets the least amount of use and therefore is the cleanest. Avoid stalls that have other stalls on both sides, they are more exposed to germs from the spray of toilet water.  If one side can be protected from dirty toilet water – take it!

Always make sure there is toilet paper.

Before you sit down and do your business, make SURE there is an adequate amount of toilet paper. No one ever likes to ask a stranger to hand them a wad under the door. And simply not wiping should not even be an option.

Never flush the toilet with your hands.

Hit the handle with your foot and save your hands unneeded germs. You don't know if the person before you had bad aim, or if they flushed the toilet with their hands after wiping.  If your foot can't reach, a last resort is taking a wad of toilet paper and wrapping it around your hands before you flush so that your skin does not come in direct contact with the handle.

Always wash your hands.

Washing your hands is obvious, but it is so important that I have to say it anyway:  after using public restrooms WASH YOUR HANDS!!! Always use warm water (if there is any) and soap, and scrub for at least 3 minutes. The dryers are better to use than paper towels because you don’t have to touch any knobs after you’ve washed (you can push the dryer’s on button with your elbow).
