Hardening plants for outside acclimation

Start 2 weeks before planting in the field. Move the plants to a cool, shady location and then gradually into the sunlight for a few hours each day. Do not try to harden tender transplants outdoors on windy days or when the temperature is below 45 degrees F. Reduce the water supplied, but do not let the plants wilt.
