Learning to buy proper shoes is the single most important decision you can make to be successful at running.
Go to a store that specializes in running equipment. They can help you buy the correct shoe

for your body mechanics. Sales people at other stores are generally not trained to sell shoes to serious runners.
Expect to pay a reasonable price for shoes. Good cushioning and sole design are a major factor in avoiding injuries. The rest of the equitment (except for warmth etc) are not nearly as important. You can run a race in a business suit but without proper shoes you will get injured.
Different brands tend to fit different. Some people have a foot shape that cannot fit certain brands. During my running career I've used the same brand 80% of the time because it fits my foot shape the best.
Don't wait too long to replace shoes. I generally found that a pair only lasts 500 miles. If your training for a marathon that maybe less than 3 months wear.
