Decorating your home office gives you the opportunity to maximize your workspace and add your own creative touch. Check out these tips for home office decorating:

  • Evaluate Your Work

Evaluate the nature of your work to determine how to start decorating your home office with furniture. Do you need lots of storage space? Will you need a large desk to fit a sizable computer monitor? A couch/chair for informal meetings (a la Mad Men)? Make a list of the furniture you will need based on the activities you do for work. Also consider a futon couch if your office will be doubling as a guest room.

  • Evaluate The Room

Evaluate the room to see how you can best utilize the space for an office. How big are the windows? Is it connected to a bathroom? Measure the dimensions of the room to determine the amount of furniture that will fit. Draw out a diagram of the room to help you visualize where each piece of furniture can go. Also make sure to bring a tape measure with you when shopping for furniture so you if it will fit in the room.

  • Style/Scheme

Figure out the style you want to decorate your office. Consider a steel filing cabinet and desk if you want your office to look high-tech/contemporary. Look for cherry wood or walnut furniture for a classic feel. Mix and match styles if you want to go with an eclectic look. Also consider implementing a color scheme inspired by the furniture and the flooring. Paint the walls in a vibrant or conservative color based on what will be most conducive to your work environment. Dress the windows with curtains or wood blinds that compliment your color scheme. Find some beautiful area rugs if your room has hardwood floor (for a classic or eclectic look).

  • Decorations

Find decorations that will accent the style/scheme of your office. Get a large floor vase for fresh flowers. Install a shelf to place souvenirs and pictures from your travels abroad. Hang artwork that will inspire you creatively and motivate you to accomplish your tasks. Place a rustic or contemporary globe on your desk. Make your office a place in which you can spend your whole day!
