Tips for Painting The Walls in Your House

  1. Be sure to clear your work space.  Move all furniture out of the room or at least to the center of the room.  Roll up carpets and take down all art.  Be sure to put old sheets/tarps/drop cloths over all of the furniture and floors.  Newspaper also works well.
  2. Open windows and doors.  Paint fumes will get to you after a while, as well as ensuring that you do not paint your windows shut if you are painting trim.
  3. Wash your wall.  If you are painting a greasy surface, like your kitchen, clean it off with a sponge and household cleaner.  New paint will stick better to clean surfaces.
  4. Line masking tape/blue paint tape  around all doors, windows, trim, and the edge where the wall meets the ceiling to help separate moldings and create straight lines.
  5. Prime your walls.  This will help seal in your final color.
  6. Fill your paint tray with one to two inches of paint and dip your roller into it.  Be sure to roll it back and forth on the ridges.  This will help remove excess paint before you start painting.
  7. When painting your walls, move your roller in broad up and down strokes, and then go over it side to side so the lines to do not look streaky.  Let the paint dry on your walls for at least a day before moving on to moldings.
  8. Remove the tape from your moldings so they can be painted.  Remove the tape slowly so that you do not rip off your paint.  Use semi gloss paint on your moldings.
  9. Do not touch the walls/moldings while it drys!  Just simply wait a few hours before applying a second coat.  If its rainy or humid, allow an extra few hours, as it will take longer to dry.
  10. Save a small amount of your paint for touch ups.  Be sure to label your paint buckets/containers with the room name (living room paint, etc.).  Also, keep a note of what each paint name/number is for future reference.
