Flat feet can be painful and can cause other more serious injuries to your feet such as bunions, corns, hammertoes, sagging joints and heel spurs. Flat feet can also cause pain and stiffness in your ankles, knees, hips and lower back. Here are 4 tips on ways to relieve pain associated with flat feet.
Stretching
Stretching your feet can help to relieve pain associated with flat feet. Put your hands on a wall in front of you and place one feet ahead of the other. Keep your heels flat and bend your front knee and hold the stretch for 15 seconds. Then bend your back knee, bringing the heel up and hold for 15 more seconds. If you do this 5-10 times daily with each foot your arches should hurt less during the day.
Proper Shoes
Flat feet need shoes that support the arch and provide stability. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and have room for your toes to wiggle. Insoles are great additions to shoes that help to stabilize your heel and support your arch and foot. Custom orthotics readjust the way your feet bear weight and are also a great help for flat footers.
Medication
Anti-inflammatory medication can help to relieve pain caused by flat feet temporarily. Ask your doctor if this is a right choice for you.
Surgery
If your flat feet cause you massive amounts of pain there are surgical options available. Doctors can stabilize and align your bones and support or reinforce your tendons to improve support for your arch.
