Tips on "Going Green"

The phrase "save the planet" has so much more meaning now than it did twenty years ago.  With the threat of global warming and animal extension on the rise, people are making a conscious effort to "green" their lives. Here are a few tips that you can use to help protect our planet.

  • Conserve Energy.  Not only will you save a few dollars, doing a few little things will do a lot to help our earth.  Consider settting your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a little bit higher in the summer.  You will hardly notice the difference.
  • Use CFL bulbs.  They are expensive at first, but in the long term will conserve energy and save you money.
  • Unplug items that you are not using.  Even if you are not using your cell phone charger, it is still using energy in the walls.  Unplug it.  Or, consider using a "smart strip" which senses when appliances are off and will cut the energy use.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water.  Also, limit the length of your "hot" shower to under 5 minutes.  This will lower your electric bills AND your water bills.
  • Try to use a drying rack or clothes line to dry your clothes instead of using a dryer.
  • If you can, walk or bike to work.  Not only is this saving gas, but you are getting great exercise!
  • If you can, telecommute a few days a week.  Or consider a carpool if you live close to other coworkers.
  • Try to cut back on meat and buy locally raised, humane organic meat, eggs and dairy.  This is healthier and better for you, as well as keeping your money within the local economy.
  • Avoid bottled water.  It is expensive and creates a lot of waste. Invest in a reusable water bottle.
  • Before you buy, look around to see if you can find it used.  Check out garage sales or consignment stores for everyday items.
  • Borrow instead of  buying.  Go to the library.  Share tools and other appliances with neighbors and family/friends.
  • Buy in bulk if at all possible (but do not waste).
  • Do not throw away electronics - try to donate or recycle them.  E-waste contains mercury which is a growing environmental problem.
  • Make your own cleaning supplies.  You can make your own effective cleaning supplies from simple (and cheap) ingredients that you may already have in your home.
  • Keep houseplants.  Certain plants, such as english ivy and peace lillies, help remove indoor air pollutants.
  • Adjust your fridge and freezer temps.  Your fridge should be set on 37 degrees F and your freezer should  be on 0 degrees F.
  • Invest in a battery operated lawn mower.  Black and Decker makes a great and affordable model.
  • Try to print your items on two sides.  This will help save paper (as well as cut down costs!)
  • Take your own grocery bags.  Even Lilly Pulitzer is making reusable grocery bags! Perfect and stylish!
