Check out these tips to stock up on eco-friendly and/or non-toxic cleaning supplies.
Basic supplies:
- Baking soda
- Washing soda
- Tea tree oil
- Liquid soap or detergent
- White distilled vinegar
- Clean spray bottles
- Clean glass jars
- Lemon juice
- Other essential oils
Bathtub scrubbing: Combine half cup baking soda with the liquid detergent and dip in a sponge; use to scrub surfaces such as bathtubs.
Window cleaner: Mix 1/4-1/2 teaspoon detergent, 3 tablespoons vinegar, and 2 cups of water and keep in a spray bottle.
All-purpose spray cleaner: Combine 1/2 teaspooon washing soda, 2 cups hot water from the tap, and a spot of liquid soap. Shake in a spray bottle; after applying, wipe surface with a rag or sponge. You can also just combine vinegar and baking soda for a general all-purpose cleaner.
Furniture polish: Mix in a glass jar 1/2 teaspoon jojoba or olive oil and 1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice.
Anti-mold spray: Mix 2 teaspoons tea tree oil and and 2 cups water, or simply spray white distilled vinegar on moldy areas. Do not rinse.
Baking soda power: The uses of baking soda seem nearly endless. One is to use it as a deodorant: sprinkle it over the spot and then vacuum.
Powdered laundry soap: Combine 1 grated bar of Castille soap, 2 cups Borax, 2 cups washing soda, and 1 cup baking soda. Store in a jar, and use 1/4 cup for each load.
Oven cleaner: Mix 1 small box of baking soda with 1 cup of liquid Castille soap.
Decrease paper towel use: Try using a sponge or an organic cloth towel when you would usually reach for the paper towel.
