Whether you are writing a story or acting in a play, use these tips to help you create a dynamic and believable character.
Make a character profile. Make a list of questions and traits. What do they look like? How tall are they? What sort of body type do they have? How do they walk? How do they talk? What kind of clothes do they wear? Where were they born? What is their favorite childhood memory? What are they good at? What do they hate doing? What goal are they pursuing in the story or play? What are their strenghts? their weaknesses? What motto do they live by? What is their relationship with the other characters in the story or play?
After answering your profile questions, make a more complete list of your chracter's particular traits. Even if you are developing a character for a play, make up everything you don't know. Make up a history for your character.
Be the character. Look in the mirror and explore with facial expressions, posture, and manners of walking. Your character should act, move, and fidget differently than you. Exploring movement will help develop a character both for the stage and for a written story.
Make up conflicts for your character. How would they react? What would they do in a certain situation? Figuring out the answers to these questions will help flesh out your character even more.
