There are many things that you can do in your own backyard, and the options will vary with the size of the yard and what it has in it.
Have an outdoor jam. Invite over everyone with a fiddle, guitar, pennywhistle, or jaw harp. Set up chairs and play music under the sky.
Play ball. Set up volleyball, badminton, or even a baseball or kickball diamond.
Pay cat 'n' mouse. A fun but simple voyageur game from the fur trade, originally played on two canoes. Set up two logs vertically parallel, about thirty feet or so far from each other. Take a rope and have two people hold each end as they each stand on one log. On "go," each person will begin pulling on the rope and trying to unbalance the other without falling themselves.
Have a gourmet grill out. Grill different kinds of meat, and have a tasting event. Or grill different sorts of vegetables as well as meat and have a make-your-own shish kabob.
Set up an obstacle course. Hang a rope from a tree, set up pull-up bars, tires to run through, etc.
Outdoor theater. Invite over historical reenactors to put on a show, or have all guests dress up from a certain historical period. Cook a meal in a Dutch oven over an open fire, and then roast corn, hot dogs, and marshmallows.
In the winter, make snowmen, snow forts, pile a hill, or play fox chase the geese.
Have an outdoor movie theater. Set up a great sheet hung over branches, and have a projecter connected to a laptop. Set up chairs or haybales for the audience to sit on.
Camp outside. Set up tents or tepees or simply sleep under the stars.
Have an outdoor pool or trampoline for the kids.
You can order slides, blown-up jumping castles, and more from companies such as www.backyardent.com.
