In 2008 Americans spent around $2.9 billion on over- the- counter cold medicine. On average, every person has 2-3 colds a year. Most people tend to ignore cold symptoms. However, each year around 36,000 Americans die from flu complications. With the first sign of cold, you should take some precautions.

Here are a few natural cold remedies:

  • Vitamin C. One of the studies showed that by taking vitamin C daily, people are less likely to get cold. If they do get sick, their cold is much shorter and lighter in comparison to people who don’t take vitamin C.  
  • Garlic. Garlic is a traditional home remedy that is known to fight colds and other illnesses. Studies show that daily intake of garlic supplements can prevent cold. Garlic is a natural booster of immune system. Eating fresh garlic while you sick can shorten your cold. The advised intake is between 1 and 2 whole cloves daily.  
  • Echinacea tea. Echinacea is a flower that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Three of Echinacea species are used for medicinal purposes: purpurea, angustifolia, and pallid Echinacea. Echinacea tea is an herbal remedy that boosts immune system. By drinking this tea every day, you can prevent your body from having colds, sore throats, fever, ear infections, coughs, and urinary tract infections. You should consume Echinacea tea with the first signs of cold.    
  • Chicken soup.  Some studies showed that consuming chicken soup while you sick can shorten your cold. Chicken soup contains anti-inflammatory remedy that fights bacteria that causes colds. Inflammations such as running noise, cough, fever, and headache are reduced by chicken soup. Also the chicken soup steam is beneficial for clearing up congestions.
