While often over looked, taking proper care of your cuticles is an essential part of personal maintenance. Cuticle cutters help your nail beds be healthier, cleaner and look better. Follow these 5 tips on how to use a cuticle cutter.

Your cuticles must be moist

Before using a cuticle cutter you most soften and prepare your cuticles. Some people use cuticle remover to soften the skin which can be found at your local drug store. Soaking your finger tips in very warm water for 5-10 minutes, or until your cuticles are soft and hydrated, works just as well.

Push your cuticles

Use the handle of the cuticle trimmer or a cuticle pusher to scrape your cuticles back off your nail to the nail bed where your finger nail starts growing. This should not hurt if your cuticles have been soaked long enough. If pushing your cuticles does hurt, you can either soak your finger tips in warm water for a longer period of time or apply moisturizing lotion and let it absorb before you try pushing again.

Trim your cuticles

Use a cuticle cutter to snip off the cuticles that you pushed up to the edge of the nail. It is best to use stainless steal cutters. Stainless steal cuticle cutters do not cut jagged or damage your nails. Trim small pieces of your cuticles off at a time to make sure you do not cut too deep. Your cuticles should not bleed. If your fingers do start to bleed it means that you have cut too closely to your actual finger.

Clean up the nail bed

Use the tip of your cuticle cutters to scrape around the edges of your nails to remove dead skin. This will give your nails a clean, finished look.

Care for your cuticles

After using cuticle cutters your cuticles will need to be moisturized properly. Apply hydrating creams for dry skin and olive oil to your hands multiple times a day to keep your cuticles healthy. If your cuticles are regularly hydrated they will be easier to push and trim next time.
