Cuticles are the thin pieces of skin that grow from your nail beds out over your nails. Caring for your cuticles properly with cuticle trimmers is important for regular hand and finger maintenance.
Prepare your cuticles
Soak your fingers in warm water for 5-10 minutes before using a cuticle trimmer. This will soften your cuticles and make them easy to push back off your nail and trim. Some people use cuticle remover which softens the cuticle skin after 2 or 3 minutes.
Push your cuticles back
Use the handle of the cuticle trimmer or a cuticle pusher to scrape your cuticles back off your nail back to the nail bed. Once your cuticles are soft this should not hurt. You can also apply lotion to your cuticles to help soften them up.
Trim your cuticles
Cut off cuticle that you pushed up to the edge of the nail using the cuticle trimmer. Trim small pieces off at a time to make sure you do not cut too deep. Your cuticles should not bleed. If your fingers start to bleed you have cut too closely.
Clean up the nail bed
Use the tip of your cuticle trimmers to remove dead skin from around your nails. Gently scrape the tip around the edge of your nail bed to remove dead skin build up. This will give your nails a clean, finished look.
Trim off your hangnails
Cuticle trimmers can be used to clip off hangnails. It is important to cut as close to the base of the hangnail as possible in order to eliminate the hangnail completely. Be careful not cut the live skin of your fingers.
