In the case of a fire it is best to be prepared by having a home fire escape plan. My family's house burnt down a few years ago. You never expect things like house fires to happen to you, however sometimes they do. Here are some tips on how to make home fire escape plans for your household:
Plan an escape from each room
Sit down with your family and plan at least two different ways to get out of each room in your house. A primary way, which is usually the fastest – through the nearest door, and a secondary route – in case the primary is blocked. Everyone in the household needs to be aware of the escape plan for each room.
Prepare each room for an escape
Make sure the windows are not stuck shut and that screens can be taken out easily. If your house has security bars over the window, make sure you know how to quickly remove them from the inside. It must be possible to get to the ground from upper stories. Secure a collapsible ladder on the roof if necessary.
Practice
By practicing escape plans every month from each room in your house your family is aware of what to do in the case of a fire.
Never open doors that are hot
Members of your household should be warned never to open doors that are hot to the touch. Before opening a door, touch it with the back of your hand. If it is hot then fire is on the other side and you should not go through. This is when the second escape route takes place.
Have a meeting place outside
Everyone in the household should be aware of a place to meet outside of the house. The location needs to be far enough away where you won't be affected by any flames or falling debris. As soon as you get there do a head count and take attendance. Is anyone missing? If so, tell the firefighters immediately.
