Recycling your household products will save you money and allow you to contribute to a greener environment. What can you recycle from your household items? Check out these tips to help you get started:
There are several items that you can reuse as containers for your household. Use old coffee cans to store and seal baked goods. Clean out a used butter tub to store hardware items like screws, nails, brads, or drill bits. Reuse juice containers to store homemade lemonade, Kool-Aid, or iced tea. Souvenir plastic cups are also perfect as decorative change jars.
It is always a good idea to save plastic shopping bags because you can use them for many different purposes. The most common reuse for plastic bags is for a garbage lining. You can also cut plastic bags and use them to cover open food containers to store in your fridge (using a rubber band to hold it). This will save you from having to constantly buy aluminum foil. Plastic bags also serve well as freezer bags or to hold packed lunches for school/work.
Cardboard boxes can be reused several times if they are kept in good shape (away from moisture). You can protect your shelves from rust and spills by laying down a cardboard lining. Cardboard can be used to set under furniture to protect the floor while moving. Setting squares of cardboard under the legs will also make the furniture easier to slide.
Use old socks and cut-up clothing items to clean instead of buying new rags. Reuse empty spray bottles to make your own non-toxic cleaning solution (one part vinegar, one part water, 2 squirts of dish soap). Keep all the gift bags you receive all year and reuse them for holiday presents at the end of the year (unless it says “happy birthday” of course).
