Itchy, scaly flakes are embarrassingly noticeable in your hair. Knowing that dandruff is a problem for many people doesn't make it seem any less worse for you. I am prone to dandruff myself and over the years have discovered a few ways to keep it at bay. Check out these 5 tips on how to treat dandruff. 
Cut those nails short.
Don't scratch your scalp when it is itchy. I have seen first hand that this will cause your dandruff problem to worsen.
Use Antidandruff Shampoo
Washing your hair every day with antidandruff shampoo reduces the build up of dead cells which causes dandruff. Be sure to leave the lather on your scalp for at least five minutes so the medication can be absorbed. I have found that thoroughly rinsing all the shampoo out is important because soap residue can increase dandruff.
Ingredients to look for in antidandruff shampoo
I have learned to look for certain ingredients in antidandruff shampoo. The most effective ingredients are:
- Coal-tar based shampoo products
- Pyrithione zinc
- Salicylic acid and sulfur
- Selenium sulfide
- ketoconazole
Use your brush.
I have noticed that daily brushing your hair helps to remove dead skin cells before they have a chance to build up. Brush your hair before you wash it in order to loosen any dead skin cells so they are sure to come off in the shower. Try massaging your scalp before you brush it to dislodge dirt, dried skin and to stimulate circulation.
Call your doctor.
For stubborn cases of dandruff that will not go away on their own or at your bidding, talk to your doctor. A doctor can prescribe you stronger shampoos medicated for dandruff that are right for your particular scalp condition.
