How to Reject Someone Without Hurting Their Feelings

Have you ever been told by a good friend that they have feelings for you?  Here is a way to tactfully reject them without hurting their feelings or breaking their heart.

  • Make sure no one is watching. No one wants to be rejected in front of a group! How embarrassing! Try to take them to another room or to the corner where you are not within hearing distance.
  • Say something like..."I just do not feel the same way" or "I see you as a great friend."
  • Act like your feel sorry and smile ONLY at the right times. If you smile throughout, you may be sending a rude message.
  • Cheer them up - be kind to them. Do not rub it in their face. Do not pity them. It was really hard for them to express their feelings towards you - realize that.
  • Be calm. Do not raise your voice to speak in a sharp tone.
  • Don't be rude! Be flattered that they do like you!
  • If you will never see this person at all, or will never see again, keep the rejection as blunt as possible. Do not send mixed messages.
  • Avoid flirting with this person after the rejection. They may think that you have changed your mind.
