Dishwashers help you save time, water and electricity. When I started using my dishwasher, my water bill actually went down. Hand washing dishes uses more water than dishwashers. The trick to buying a good dishwasher is knowing what to look for. Here are 8 tips you should know before buying a dishwasher.
The Most Expensive is not Always the Best.
Shoot for buying a mid-level dishwasher with small additional features. Mid-level economy dishwashers that come have a better performance than general, cheaper dishwasher models and perform the same if not better than luxury brands. You can purchase mid-level dishwashers anywhere from $300-$800.
Many Arms with Small Spray Holes
Look for a dishwasher with more than one spray arm with small water spray holes. The more spray arms a dishwasher has, the cleaner your dishes will be. Smaller water holes means your water is coming out at a higher pressure providing more scrubbing power.
Food Disposal
A dishwasher that can eliminate food chucks and dispose of them with the used water is the best choice. Otherwise you waste water by having to rinse your dishes before they go in the dishwasher to prevent food from blocking the drains.
Energy Star
Dishwashers rated with an Energy Star use less energy and water than the traditional dishwasher models. Dishwashers with the energy star meet the new federal energy consumption guidelines.
Temperature Control
Look for a dishwasher that can raise the temperature of the water. The hotter the water, the cleaner and more sanitary your dishes will be.
Cycle Check
Make sure the dishwasher runs the washing cycles that you need. The more cycles it has the more care your dishes will receive. There are cycles for just about everything, from heavy duty pots and pans, crystal and china, to plastic cups and plates.
A rinse and hold cycle is important to have if you let your dishes sit in the dishwasher for a few days. This prevents bacteria and fungus growth and food residue from building up on your dishes.
Sensor Technology
Choose a dishwasher that can detect the amount of dirt and food that is on your dishes and adjust the amount of water used to match your dishes' needs. Sensor technology can help you save water and energy by using super scrub power only on the dishes that need it.
Noise Insulation
Before you buy a dishwasher make sure the surrounding insulation is thick. Dishwashers come with a layer of insulation to help reduce noise. The thicker the insulation, the quieter your dishwasher will be.
