A noisy neighbor can be the greatest nuisance.  I have found that there are very effective ways for dealing with the loud people that unfortunately live next to you.  Follow these 4 tips for dealing with a noisy neighbor:

Be Polite

A noisy neighbor is often simply unaware of how loud and annoying they are.  Just talk to your neighbor the first time they disturb you and explain that whatever it is that they are doing is really loud and distracting.   Use calm, even tones and a respectful manner.  Being polite always goes farther than yelling or acting annoyed.  Never resort to threats or violence because then you will become the neighbor in the wrong.

Call the Head Honcho

If your calm and respectful reminders to keep it down don't seem to make a difference, call your landlord or apartment manager.  The head honcho is normally more than willing to take control of a noisy situation in order to keep other tenants happy. Remember to stay calm when talking to those who may be able to take care of the problem for you no one wants to help anyone who is rude.

Call the police

If you have contacted management at least 3 times about the same a noisy neighbor and there is still no change in volume, it is acceptable to call the police and file a complaint. Utilize your tax money and quiet down those neighbors of yours with authority! Again, stay calm when talking to the police and explain the repetitive noise situation.  It helps to have documented how frequently the noise disturbances are and remember to tell them of other ways you’ve already tried to deal with the situation.

Sue that noisy neighbor

It is actually possible to sue people for extreme and repetitive noise disturbances.  Your written records of contacting your landlord and the police will work in your favor. Make sure to keep your own record of dates and times when there are disturbances.  The courts can rule that you collect a "daily noise fee" for putting up with your neighbors’ noisiness.  You can also sue your noisy neighbor for the cost in moving and terminating your lease.
