Living with another person can be difficult no matter who it is. Nothing is worse than finding out that you and your roommate have absolutely nothing in common and mix as well as let’s say… oil and water.
While living with another person can always prove to be difficult, there are steps you can take to properly match yourself with a roommate. Throughout my many years (more than 15) of residence sharing I have found 4 tips that will help you to go about successfully roommate matching.
Be blunt from the beginning
The only way to know if you are going to get along with someone is by asking all the awkward questions up front. Asking will save you from discovering something unfortunate about your roommate later on. Do they smoke in the house? Do they drink excessively? Do they do drugs? Are they morning or night people? Do they want to divide food or share? Are they clean or messy? What kind of TV and movies do they watch? Do they have people over? If they do, are there over night guests?
Find someone who wants the same thing
Know what your roommate relationship is going to be. You can be looking for a friend, or just someone to share rent with. Whatever the case make sure you both are good with what the other person wants. The key to good roommate matching is to avoid disappointment to do false expectations once you move in.
Check their references
The best way to tell if someone is the kind of roommate you are looking for is by talking to their previous roommates. Offer your potential roommate references of past roommates to call as well. By both checking with prior living partners you get a good look at what kind of roommate you both were and get a feel for what the other person’s living style is like.
