The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, tests English proficiency levels for people whose first language is not English. Passing the TOEFL is required by most American colleges and universities as a prerequisite to admission. Preparing for the TOEFL test can be done by following these 3 easy steps:
Determine where you will take the test
Sign up and commit yourself to take it, which motivates you to start preparing for the TOEFL test. You can choose between taking an internet, computer or paper version of the test. The TOEFL website will give you more information about each test version test dates and test centers in your area.
Purchase a Study Guide
A TOEFL study guide will give you review sections on the content that the test will cover. Study guides also provide sample questions and practice tests so that you can become familiar with the format and type of questions you will be asked. Purchase a study guide and work through it.
Study and Practice!
The key to preparing for any large college entrance exam is to study. Go over grammar, vocabulary, practice reading comprehension and essay writing. Practice with the English language as much as possible by speaking, listening to the radio and watching English movies and television.
Read English newspapers and magazines and make lists of new vocabulary words that you come across. Making flashcards of English grammar and vocabulary can help in the study process. The more you study and practice English the more familiar you will become with the language, and thus the better you will do on the TOEFL test.
