No one likes to be sunburned, but sometimes it just happens. I have had my fair share of sunburns and have tried various treatment methods. Below you will find what is the best treatment for sunburn.

Remove Yourself From The Sun. The moment you feel yourself getting a sunburn or see that your skin is turning red, get out of the sun. The longer you let yourself burn, the worse the damage will be to your skin. Getting sunburned causes your skin to age prematurely and puts you at greater risk for skin cancer. Always wear at least 25 SPF sun block when going outside to prevent burning.

Cool Off Your Body. Bathe yourself as soon as possible after you have gotten sunburned. Take a cold shower or soak in a cool bath for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Once you get out of the sun, your skin keeps burning until it cools off. Make sure not to wash yourself with soap because your skin needs its natural oils to heal the sunburn.

Apply Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera relieves sunburn pain, stops the sunburn from getting worse, and replenishes moisture to the skin. This helps to reduce and sometimes even prevent peeling and blistering and can make a sunburn turn into a tan. Use 100% Aloe Vera and apply generously to all sunburned areas every few hours.  Make sure not to use any other type of lotion on your sunburn, as regular lotion locks heat into the skin causing the burn to get worse.

Drink Lots of Water. Your body will naturally become dehydrated when you have a sunburn. Make sure to drink lots of water and reduce the amount of salty foods, alcohol and caffeinated beverages that you eat since these naturally dehydrate you.

Apply Cold Compresses. Set cold, damp wash clothes on your sunburn to help soak out the heat and sooth the pain of your sunburn. If your eyelids are sunburned, use chilled wet teabags as compresses over your eyes.

Take Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen-based pain relievers can be taken to help reduce fever and pain, stinging and swelling associated with your sunburn. Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Tylenol are inexpensive and can be found at any local drug or grocery store. Make sure to only take the recommended dosage.

Seek Medication Attention If Your Sunburn Is Accompanied By:

  • Large blisters
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Extreme pain
