A migraine is such a painful experience that words can’t even describe what it feels like. The pounding and throbbing, nausea and sensitivity to light and noise make migraines one of the worst things I have ever suffered. You don’t need to wait hours for migraines to subside on their own. Take action now by finding out what is the best treatment for migraines by reading the tips below.

Natural Treatment at Home

  • Detect and Medicate. Learn the early signs of a migraine and take pain reliever before it strikes full force. Early signs vary from person to person, the most common symptoms of an oncoming migraine are spotted vision, seeing wavy lines, and tingling in the hands, arms or face. Take a doctor-approved dosage of pain killer and lie down to rest. The early symptoms should subside and you will be able to carry on with your day.
  • Rest. In the case that there are no early symptoms or the migraine comes anyway, cease activity and lie down in a dark room. Rest and sleep is the best thing you can do to get rid of a migraine. Elevate your head and feet and close your eyes to rest. Sleep if you can. Continuing activity during a migraine will only make it get worse.
  • Drink. Guzzle water when you have a migraine. Dehydration can actually be the cause of headaches and migraines. It is also important to reduce your salt intake, as salt dehydrates the body.
  • Regulate your diet. Migraines can often be caused by an undiagnosed food allergy. Keep a food and migraine diary. Write down the time of everything you eat and keep track of when you experience headaches and migraines. Look for patterns – is there a specific type of food or ingredient in a food that you eat before you suffer a migraine? If so, cut it out of your diet. Many people can avoid migraines altogether by regulating what they eat.

Medical Prevention

  • Chiropractic Adjustments. A chiropractor can realign your spine, helping to stop migraines caused by back problems from occurring.
  • Biofeedback. You can teach your brain to avoid migraines altogether. Doctors can actually train your brain to control muscle tension, blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate – among many other things – that can cause migraines.
  • Acupuncture. By sticking small needles in certain acupuncture points specific to your individual migraine symptoms, acupuncture can relieve pain and stress and reduce and eliminate migraines.
  • Craniofacial Therapy. By massaging your head, face and tail bone certified massage therapists can relieve tension and irregularities in the central nervous system that cause migraines.
