Getting a good score on the MCAT, or the Medical College Admission Test, is essential if you want to have a competitive application when applying to medical school. My friends who have taken the MCAT have told me that there are some important things to do when preparing for the MCAT test in order to get a high score.
Understand the MCAT
MCAT is a timed standardized test created by the Association of American Medical Colleges. You must register 5 weeks before the test date and pay $175 to take the test. It is imperative to take the MCAT early enough for the results to be processed and returned to you. Many students have had to postpone medical school a year because the results did not come back in time to apply.
Know what is on the MCAT
The MCAT has four scored sections: Verbal reasoning, physical sciences (meaning physics and chemistry), biological sciences (meaning biology and organic chemistry) and a writing sample section.
Study the MCAT sections
There are many study guides available for the MCAT. You can find them online or at your local bookstore. Your school bookstore might also have some MCAT study guides. Ask your professors and advisors for suggestions on the best ones. Study each section of the MCAT carefully and make sure you know the content well. If you have any questions, look it up or ask a professor to explain it to you.
Practice
The MCAT is a test you can take more than once, and if it takes a few shots at it before you get a passing or acceptable score, that is fine. The key is to practice taking the test as much as possible. Ideally, you will want to take free practice tests instead of the real thing since it costs so much.
