Very cold winters, forsythia flower buds can be killed, eliminating bloom the following spring. Temperatures of -10° to -15° will kill buds. If forsythias were pruned at wrong time preceding year, flower buds may have been cut off. Forsythia flowers form on previous season's growth, so pruning should be done immediately after flowers fade.
