Have bad breath problems? Learn how to determine if you have chronic bad breath, and what you can do to stop it from disrupting your life.

What is chronic bad breath?

Chronic bad breath is when no matter the brushing, scrubbing and cleansing done an odor coming from your mouth remains unpleasant.  Chronic bad breath is generally a result of a more serious health problem.

You know you have chronic bad breath when…

  • You frequently have a bad taste in your mouth.
  • People take a step back from you when you are speaking to them.
  • People frequently offer you gum or mints.
  • People frequently tell you that your breath is really bad.
  • You have a white or yellow film covering your tongue.

Chronic bad breath may be caused by….

There are both dental and medical causes for chronic bad breath.  Your bad breath could be a result of any of the following:

  • A dry mouth
  • Certain medications
  • Allergies
  • Bacterial growth
  • Sinus infection
  • Certain foods
  • Menstruation
  • Diabetes
  • Dental decay
  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Oral cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Blood disorders
  • Tonsillitis
  • Lung disease

The good news…

Absolutely everyone gets bad breath, and normally it is due to a simple cause and nothing serious. If you are concerned that your bad breath is not getting better and might be a result of a more serious disease, consult your dentist.  If your bad breath is not associated with other health concerns or symptoms you most likely do not have chronic bad breath.

Some chronic bad breath treatments…

If you are diagnosed with chronic bad breath there are effective treatments available that stop bad mouth odor from interrupting your life.

  • Treat the cause of chronic bad breath. With the help of a doctor, determine what is the bigger problem causing your chronic bad breath. When you treat the cause, the resulting chronic bad breath should diminish as well.
  • Dentists can treat your mouth with carbamide peroxide.  This chemical is a strong teeth bleach and mouth disinfectant. It is known to help stop chronic bad breath after as few as 3 treatments.
  • You can fight against chronic bad breath with good oral hygiene. Floss and brush your teeth after every meal, and make sure to scrub your tongue with your toothbrush or tongue scraper. Rinse your mouth and gargling with mouthwash to clean and disinfect your mouth and tongue. While this will not stop chronic bad breath from recurring, it can mask bad odor and prevent the bad breath from building up.
