An organized closet is clean and easy to search in. Use these tips to help you get one of your own.
Eliminate clutter. Take out everything from the closet, and clean and vacuum inside. Divide the items into categories: top clothes, pants, skirts, belts, scarves, boxes, shoes, ties, etc. Go through your stuff and get rid of things that don’t go in your closet, and things you can get rid of. If you haven’t worn something in a while, give it away.
Organize clothes. You can use the top and bottom method – shirts with shirts, pants with pants – or the outfit method – casual, dressy, and casual-dressy outfits – or combine the two.
Utilize hangers. Hang up as many clothes as possible. Use thin-width hangers and multiple-tiered hangers to save space. If you only have one clothing rod, add another one if you've enough room.
Hang on hooks. Put a hanging rack on the back of the door. Hang up belts, necklaces, scarves, purses, etc.
Shelves. Put in a shelf above your clothing rod if there isn’t one there already; you may want to install another one halfway up the back of the closet as well for extra room.
Shoes. Place small shoe pairs in a basket. Line up the rest of the shoes on the floor, or store shoes in transparent boxes on a shelf to keep
Drawers. If you have a big enough closet and a variety of accessories, you can put a small plastic or wooden set of drawers inside. Store sewing accessories, etc.
Make it easy-to-find. Store in the back things you don’t use very much, and place things you often use – outfits and shoes – in a central, easy-to-grab space.
