Rules for Regifting Gifts

Regifting is risky, however, if you do it right you can pull it off.  Here are six rules to follow while regifiting an unwanted gift.

  1. Never regift a present you have already used.  It is just beyond tacky.
  2. Inspect before you wrap.  Look for fingerprints, "sell by" dates, missing warranty cards on appliances or electronics, or notes to YOU from the original giver.
  3. Wrap the give in a plain white box with tissue paper or a decorative gift bag.  If you have a collection of small items, use a cellophane wrapped gift basket with a colorful ribbon.
  4. Do not go back to the store where it came from to get a bag.  If your giftee tries to return it to the store, she may be surprised to find out that the product has not been around for two years.
  5. Keep a list of who has given you what.  How embarrassing would it be to regift the gift back to the original gift givers.  Also, avoid regifting gifts to people close to those that gave the original gift.
  6. If someone asks you where you got the gift, you can easily say that you got it at some "hole in the wall store (somewhere far far away)"
