Restoring the wood floor in your home will bring back the beauty your flooring once had. Check out these tips on how to do wood floor restoration yourself:

Take all of the furniture, rugs, and wall decorations out of the room. To avoid getting dust in the other rooms of your home, set a box fan in the window you will be working in. Open a window in another room across the hall and set the fan to exhaust. The negative pressure will effectively keep dust from circulating throughout the house.
Attach 100-grit abrasive screen and sand down the entire floor of the room. Go across the room in overlapping patterns to avoid creating missing spots (like moving a lawn). Sweep and vacuum the floor after you have thoroughly sanded the surface. Inspect the floor to make sure there are no more scratches or wear marks. If so, sand the floor again. Use a random orbital sander to sand the perimeter of the floor and hard-to-reach areas. You can also use a rubber sanding block (with fine-grit) to get difficult areas. Make sure to sand with the grain.
Do your best to sweep and vacuum all the dust in the room. Use the vacuum hose extensions to remove dust from all the corners and crevasses. Next, dampen a cloth with mineral spirits and wipe down the entire floor. Turn on the fan and vacuum one more time to ensure you’ve cleaned everything.
Use a 5” varnish brush to apply an even coat of wood finish to the entire floor. Start on one end of the room and work your way across. Brush in the direction of the planks in strips of 2 feet at a time. Use a smaller brush for the tie-in (1 3/8”-2”).
Place area rugs throughout your house to protect your wood floors. This is especially important in front of your stove, sink, and refrigerator. Get thick doormats to keep people from tracking dirt and sand into your home. Vacuum often and make sure to wipe up spills immediately. Preventive maintenance will keep your floor looking beautiful!
